The Descent (2005)

Shauna MacDonald is the star of the 2005 classic horror film Descent. The movie is fantastic for viewers who enjoy ambiguity, horrible endings, and strong female leads. The story opens with Sarah and her friends choosing to go cave diving in North Carolina. But when a collapsed tunnel leaves them stranded, and they learn the caves are home to some terrible flesh-eating animals, their once fun-filled adventure swiftly turns into a nightmare.

The Descent depicts the characters’ struggle to survive perfectly, and it has two different endings depending on what version you are watching; UK or US. If you desire a little more of a happy ending, it is advisable to stick with the US version. Otherwise, UK’s version is ideal for people who love gruesome and depressing conclusions. The strong performance of the actors, the setting, and the intense makeup make it an excellent survival horror movie on Amazon Prime.

A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

The 2018 release of the first A Quiet Place film was followed up successfully by the second installment. The movie is set directly after the tragic conclusion of the first film and shows the struggle of the remaining members of the Abbott family to survive against the Death Angels, a race of blind aliens with exceptional hearing. The movie’s protagonist is Emily Blunt (Evelyn), who wants to keep her children safe from unknown perils.

The family meets up with an old buddy, Emmett, and joins forces with him in hopes of finding a new haven beyond the sea. A Quiet Place Part II is a successful sequel because it not only broadened Krasinski’s post-apocalyptic environment but successfully replicated all the outstanding elements of its predecessor. The main highlight of A Quiet Place Part II was the inclusion of Cillian Murphy in the cast.

Writers: John Krasinski, Bryan Woods, and Scott Beck

Goodnight Mommy (2022)

Adaptations or remakes always make people skeptical, but Matt Sobel’s movie does an okay job. Goodnight Mommy, starring Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, is the remake of the 2014 Austrian horror film of the same name. The twins move back in with their mother (Naomi Watts) after living with their father. They find it odd to see her covered in bandages due to cosmetic surgery at first. However, her strange behavior soon leads them to believe that she is not their biological mother but an imposter who wants to harm them.

The rising tension of finding out what’s hidden beneath their mom’s bandages contributes to the horror element in this Amazon movie rather than the actual monsters. Although it is not as dark, violent, or scary as the original movie, it is still enjoyable enough to watch on a chilly Halloween night.

Writers: Kyle Warren, Veronika Franz, and Severin Fiala

Director: Matt Sobel

Cast: Naomi Watts, Cameron Crovetti, Nicholas Crovetti, Peter Hermann, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Jeremy Bobb

Candyman (2021)

Nia DaCosta’s Candyman is a 2021 sequel to the legendary 1992 film of the same name. The film disregards the previous sequels and centers on Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a Chicago-based visual artist who dives deeper into the lore of the infamous Candyman while seeking inspiration for his next set of work. However, as more people start dying, the world of the paintings begins to seep into reality as the main killer reappears.

Candyman’s brilliant cast brings out the striking aesthetic and dynamic narrative of the movie, and our lead character especially captivates the audience as a hysterical artist. So, if you are a fan of urban legends, this movie might enhance your Halloween experience.

Writers: Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and Nia DaCosta

Director: Nia DaCosta

Cast: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tony Todd, Vanessa Estelle, and more.

Saint Maud (2020)

Saint Maud, the directorial debut of Rose Glass, presents a terrifying but unique depiction of faith, salvation, and madness in a fallen world. The story revolves around a Catholic hospice nurse Maud (Morfydd Clark), who becomes obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient. The nurse with a devout born-again mentality reaches extreme heights to push her faith onto others. As a result, no one is safe from her cleansing.

Saint Maud does not feature any ghouls or monsters, but it shows the psychological aspects of human nature and reveals how extreme faith can damage others. This horror movie certainly earns its spot in our best Halloween movies on Amazon Prime list.

Cast: Morfydd Clark, Jennifer Ehle, Lily Fraser, Lily Knight, Marcus Hutton, Turlough Convery, Rosie Sansom, Jel Djelal

Suspiria (2018)

Another remake on our list! Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name, which is about a prestigious German dance academy with a shadowy background. Starring Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Tilda Swinton, Suspiria is perhaps one of the most horrifying Amazon Prime originals. The movie starts with Susie Bannion’s arrival in 1970s Berlin to audition for the lead dancer in the prestigious dance academy – Helena Markos Dance Co.

On Susie’s first day, someone kills an expelled student. A short while later, the former lead dancer breaks down in front of her therapist and confesses that the school is managed by witches. The film follows the inquisitive therapist and a troupe member as they delve deeper into the academy’s past to uncover sinister mysteries. Suspiria is a great horror movie on Amazon because despite taking many artistic liberties, it stays close to the source. It is a delight for fans of horror films and an excellent pick for the Halloween season.

Director: Luca Guadagnino

Cast: Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Elena Fokina

The Collector (2009)

The Collector is the perfect blend of all the craziness and murders of a film like Saw with more fuel, minus all the drama. In short, it is an explosive yet captivating mess. The film stars Josh Stewart as an ex-con Arkin, who decides to rob a property in a desperate effort to pay off a debt. A terrible decision to start with, but his luck is so awful that a notorious maniac has already set up several inescapable death traps in his intended residence.

Initially, the movie was supposed to be a prequel to the Saw series, but it ultimately turned into an independent film. The Collector may not be the best horror movie, but it is bound to keep you entertained if you are a fan of the Saw franchise.

Writers: Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan

Director: Marcus Dunstan

Cast: Josh Stewart, Juan Fernandez, Michael Reilly Burke, Andrea Roth, Daniella Alonso, Madeline Zima, Karley Scott Collins

The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

A list of horror films would be incomplete without the traditional werewolf or vampire subgenre. Several horror filmmakers attempt these genres with varying degrees of success every few years. However, The Wolf of Snow Hollow exceeds our expectations. In this lycan-filled horror film, Jim Cummings plays John Marshall, an overworked police officer who must look into the growing number of killings that occur after every full moon.

While the townspeople paint the perpetrator as a werewolf, John tries to avoid the myths while investigating the cases. The Wolf of Snow Hollow is an incredible thriller that keeps the audience entertained throughout its duration.

Director: Jim Cummings

Cast: Jim Cummings, Riki Lindhome, Robert Forster, Chloe East, Jimmy Tatro, Will Madden, and more.
