For more than four years, fans of J.R.R Tolkien’s works have anticipated the premier of this prequel with mixed feelings. Now the moment is finally here to evaluate whether Jeff Bezos’s Amazon, who himself is a die-hard fan of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, has done justice to Tolkien’s fictional Middle-earth or will it turn out to be yet another poor adaptation of a bestselling novel.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

This epic saga has something spectacular to offer for everyone. Young or old, men or women, Lord of the Rings enthusiasts or newcomers, the Rings of Power will take everybody on an enthralling journey for 60 minutes each week.

The Rings of Power depicts a period thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings took place. Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the story begins right after the creation of Elven and human kingdoms. The Rings of Power will explore the origins of lead characters like Galadriel, Elrond, and Sauron, their rise to power, and ultimately the fall of Sauron.

The five seasons of the Rings of Powers are said to give the viewers a synopsis of 3,441 years because that’s how long the Second Age lasted.

Season Overview

The first season premiered with two back-to-back episodes on September 1, 2022, and gave us an insight into Middle-earth during the Age of Numenor (Second Age). We got reintroduced to the fictional characters like elves, dwarves, orcs, and Harfoots that habited the mystical world created by Tolkien.

Even though most reviews criticized the debut episodes for being slow-paced and lacking the original language of The Lord of Rings trilogy, brilliant cinematography, fine acting skills, and some lighthearted humor garnered positive comments from critics and the audience.

Throughout this season, viewers will slowly witness the mystery unravel as Middle-earth is plunged into darkness and evil again. The audience will see the forging of rings that were gifted to elves, dwarves, and humans, and how heroes rose to the occasion and defeated Sauron to restore peace in their kingdoms.

The casting director did an amazing job on inclusivity as several actors of color were cast for prominent roles in the show. The series has 23 recurring characters and the lead roles of Galadriel, Elrond, Arondir, and Celebrimbor will be seen sharing the most screen time.

Audience Reviews

The Lord of the Rings- the Rings of Power received mixed reviews. Some LOTR fans were disappointed at the on-screen adaptation and criticized the series for drifting away from Tolkien’s representation of Middle-earth. Others complained about the slow pace of events that were making the series a drag. The harshest critics of the series called it a pompous show of Bezoz’s excessive wealth that lacked a gripping storyline.

There were many trolls and haters on the block, including the world’s richest man Elon Musk who publically slammed the series in his tweet; “Tolkien is turning in his grave.”

However, some stood up to applaud the prequel for its action-packed performances and amazing special effects.

Overall, the Rings of Power was given an 86% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb, and 4 out of 5 stars on Common Sense Media.
