Is Spectrum Internet Good?

According to U.S. News, Spectrum is one of the best internet providers of 2022 because it maintains an excellent balance between its cost and performance. You can find this provider in most states, and although it might not be the cheapest option, it offers high-quality and reliable internet connectivity. Spectrum offers three easy-to-understand plans based on speed tiers. However, the speeds may vary with your location. Recently Spectrum has also upgraded the speeds of two internet plans, “Spectrum Internet” and “Spectrum Internet Ultra” (we will get into their details in a bit).

Another attribute is that Spectrum’s internet service features unlimited data and no contracts. It also offers new customers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Its straightforward approach, transparent pricing, and perks make it an appealing option for many people.

Spectrum is suitable for:

  • People who require faster internet speeds than DSL internet
  • Heavy internet users
  • People who bundle their services

Spectrum is unsuitable for:

  • People who require faster upload speeds
  • Light internet users who are on a tight budget

Reviews on Spectrum Internet Plans

Spectrum primarily has three internet plans based on speed tiers – Spectrum Internet, Spectrum Internet Ultra, and Spectrum Internet Gig. Their standard internet plan starts from $49.99 per month for the first 12 months. Spectrum markets all internet plans with a promotional price and increases your bill by $25 after the end of 12 months.

Here is an overview of Spectrum Internet Plans.

PlanPromotional PriceSpeedData CapsContact Provider
Spectrum Internet$49.99/month300 MbpsNoneCall Now
Spectrum Internet Ultra$69.99/month500 MbpsNoneCall Now
Spectrum Internet Gig$89.99/month1000 MbpsNoneCall Now

While Spectrum Internet Gig may look tempting with 1 Gbps speed, you should consider your internet usage before choosing a plan. Otherwise, you might end up overpaying for internet speed you don’t need. For example, if you live in a small household, Spectrum Internet is sufficient for you. You can sign up for standalone internet service or bundle it with Spectrum TV and Spectrum Voice.

Spectrum Internet

Despite being the most basic plan, Spectrum Internet offers speeds up to 300 Mbps for $49.99. It is suitable for average households, allowing you to connect up to five devices. You can efficiently work from home, stream shows or browse the internet simultaneously. In short, Spectrum internet is suitable for:

  • Moderate internet activities
  • Email
  • Web browsing
  • Video Streaming

Spectrum Internet Ultra Review

Spectrum Internet Ultra gives you a significant speed boost for only $20 more than Spectrum Internet. This plan is suitable for larger households as it offers you 500 Mbps speed, which is perfect for connecting up to eight devices. This plan allows you to conduct multiple online activities without interruptions or lags. In conclusion, you’ll rarely need a higher speed plan for your home internet unless you want more upload speeds. Spectrum Internet Ultra is perfect for

  • Downloading large files
  • Attending video conferences
  • HD Streaming
  • Playing games

Spectrum Internet Gig Review

Spectrum Internet Gig gives you 1000 Mbps speed for $89.99. It is perfect for small businesses and large households with more than eight members. Spectrum Gigabit internet allows you to connect more than ten devices and do everything without experiencing any lags. Spectrum internet gig is perfect for

  • Movie enthusiasts
  • Hardcore gamers
  • Connecting multiple devices simultaneously
  • Connecting smart home devices

Spectrum primarily relies on the hybrid fiber-coaxial cable network to connect its customers, which allows it to provide considerably faster speeds than DSL, Satellite and fixed wireless internet services. However, it is still slower than fiber internet. The most significant limitation of cable internet is its slower upload speeds, so if symmetrical speeds are your main requirement, this provider is not for you.

The best thing about Spectrum is its comprehensive availability. Since Spectrum’s coverage spans 41 states, this makes it easier to list down the states where it doesn’t operate. So, if you live anywhere other than Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Iowa, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, or Washington DC; there is a chance that you might be able to access Spectrum internet.

Like other cable providers, Spectrum also struggles to offer service to rural areas with low population density due to a lack of infrastructure. So make sure to check the availability of Spectrum in your area before considering this provider. You can access services from Spectrum services in the following states.

Spectrum Coverage

ColoradoMinnesotaSouth Carolina
IllinoisNew HampshireWest Virginia
IndianaNew MexicoWisconsin
KentuckyNew JerseyWyoming
LouisianaNew York
MaineNorth Carolina.

Even though Spectrum is available in these states, it does not provide full coverage in every geographical area. Services are often accessible in isolated patches in most states and are mainly available in densely populated cities and towns. This provider has the best availability in these five states:

  1. Spectrum Ohio
  2. Spectrum Maine
  3. Spectrum New York
  4. Spectrum Wisconsin
  5. Spectrum North Carolina

Additional Costs for Spectrum Internet

Spectrum Internet comes with a few additional costs. Some of them, like installation, are one-time fees, while others, like equipment rental fees, are included in your monthly Spectrum internet bill. The best thing about Spectrum is that it is not obscure about these costs. So, you don’t have to dig deeper to find them out.

Equipment Fee

Spectrum provides a free modem with every internet plan. However, if you prefer a wireless WiFi connection, you’ll need to pay an extra $5 for WiFi with Spectrum Internet and Spectrum Internet Ultra. Fortunately, you can skip this fee by installing your Spectrum-compatible router or subscribing to Spectrum Internet Gig.

Plus, if you want to use Spectrum’s WiFi Pod, you’ll have to pay an extra $3 for each unit.

Equipment FeeFee
Spectrum WiFi$5.00/month (with Spectrum Internet
and Spectrum Internet Ultra)
WiFi Pod$3.00/month for each unit

Installation Fee

Although Spectrum gives two installation options, it encourages new customers to opt for Spectrum self-installation option. Spectrum provides a self-install kit, and you can either pick it up from a local Spectrum store or have it mailed to your address. This method is free, but you’ll still need to pay $19.99 for service activation. On the other hand, Spectrum charges $49.99 for professional installation.

Installation FeeFee
Self-installation$19.99 for service activation
WiFi Pod installation$49.99

Other Fee

Unlike other providers, Spectrum doesn’t surprise you with hidden costs. It gives you a 30-day grace period before charging a late fee. You also don’t have to worry about overage or early termination fees with Spectrum. Following are a few other costs associated with Spectrum internet plans.

Other FeesPrice
Late payment fee$8.95
Reconnection fee$9.99
Equipment upgrade fee to Internet Gig plan$19.99

Spectrum Internet Speed

Since Spectrum is a cable internet provider, it offers asymmetrical upload and download speeds. Even though it only provides three internet speed options, they are sufficient for most online activities. Spectrum has recently upgraded the speeds of its two internet plans.

Spectrum Internet, which used to offer 200 Mbps, now provides 300 Mbps speed. This speed is perfect for average households with few connected devices. Likewise, Spectrum Internet Ultra now offers 500 Mbps instead of 400 Mbps speed, ideal for larger families with multiple devices like cell phones, home security systems, and smart TVs.

Spectrum’s fastest internet plan is internet gig, delivering 1000 Mbps speed, which makes it perfect for gamers. You can do anything with this high speed without experiencing any lags. However, you should carefully evaluate your existing internet speeds before opting for this internet plan, as Spectrum’s first two plans are usually sufficient for most cases.

Data Caps

Unlike competitors, Spectrum offers unlimited data with every plan. It neither throttles your speed nor charges overage fees. Hence, you don’t have to monitor your data usage while using the internet. Spectrum’s unlimited data is ideal for downloading large files, streaming, or even working from home.

Spectrum does not impose contracts on its customers, allowing you to switch providers in cases of moving home or unsatisfactory service without any consequences. This provider is perfect for people who are renting, temporarily staying at a place due to work, or want to disregard long-term commitments.

Spectrum Internet Extras

Spectrum offers extra perks to increase the value of its internet plans.

Access to Free Nationwide WiFi Hotspots

Besides home internet, the provider offers Spectrum Out-of-Home WiFi to the customers for free. Spectrum WiFi Hotspots network features approximately 530,000 hotspots available across most of its coverage area. Hence, you don’t have to miss important tasks as you can access the internet even when you are out and about.

It is very straightforward to connect to a Spectrum WiFi hotspot, as all you have to do is to select the network in your range and sign in with your account name and password. You can also use the My Spectrum app for quick access.

Free Security Software

Spectrum also includes a free Security Suite app with every plan to protect your devices. This award-winning security software enhances your online experience by providing high-level security without extra payment. Spectrum Security Suite app includes remarkable features like parental control, spyware protection, and automatic virus removal to ensure a safe connection.

Other Benefits

To make things sweeter, Spectrum offers several other benefits. Its round-the-clock helpline troubleshoots your problems with a support team. Spectrum also provides “Peacock Premium” to its bundle subscribers for free. Additionally, you get access to six Spectrum personal email addresses.

Spectrum Internet Bundles

Spectrum allows you to create customized bundles depending on your requirements.

Spectrum Triple Play

The triple play packages let you bundle any Spectrum internet plan with Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Voice with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The standard bundle starts at $114.99 per month, with the prices increasing for higher internet packages.

The package includes high-speed internet, 125+ channels, and more than 28 calling features. Spectrum Bundles only include basic cable channels and no longer include premium channels in the package. Hence, you have to buy them for extra money if you are an entertainment enthusiast.

Spectrum vs. Xfinity

Spectrum and Xfinity are both cable internet providers with almost similar coverage areas. While Xfinity offers a broader range of plans based on three regions – Northeastern, Central, and West, Spectrum offers three straightforward internet plans based on different speeds. Where Spectrum only offers three speeds – 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, and 1000 Mbps, Xfinity provides speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to a whopping 6000 Mbps.

Although Xfinity and Spectrum differ based on plans, prices, and speeds, data caps are what sets them apart. Where Spectrum offers unlimited data with every internet plan, you get 1.2 TB of data with Xfinity. Most of Xfinity’s plans also come with contracts, whereas Spectrum is one of the no-contract internet providers. In conclusion, although Xfinity offers the fastest internet speed – 6000 Mbps, Spectrum provides better value with unlimited data, no contracts, and market-competitive rates.

Spectrum vs. Verizon

Where Spectrum is the largest cable internet provider, Verizon is only available in eight states. However, Spectrum and Verizon overlap in many areas of the Northeast. And although Verizon also offers DSL internet, the absolute comparison usually comes down to cable vs. fiber internet. Like Spectrum, Verizon Fios offers three primary internet plans based on similar speed tiers – 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, and 1000 Mbps. However, unlike Spectrum, its internet plans have symmetrical upload and download speeds. Verizon Fios also does not offer promotional rates. Hence your monthly bill won’t automatically go up after a year.

Although Verizon Fios offers a lower price for its middle plan than Spectrum, the equipment fee is much higher than the latter. Additionally, Verizon Fios is known for its remarkable customer service, scoring 71 on ACSI’s latest rankings compared to Spectrum’s 63. On the other hand, both providers offer internet plans with unlimited data and do not force contracts on their customers. In conclusion, your choice comes down to the preferred internet technology.

Spectrum vs. AT&T

Both Spectrum and AT&T are among the country’s biggest internet providers. While AT&T’s coverage area centers around the South, the Midwest, and California, Spectrum has the best availability in the Northeast. The coverage areas of both companies overlap throughout most of the South and Midwest and parts of Texas and California.

AT&T offers hybrid-fiber, fiber internet, and fixed wireless internet services, but its fiber internet provides the best value. However, the service is limited to 21 states, but it delivers remarkable value with symmetrical speeds, unlimited data, and no equipment rental fees. While Spectrum only offers three simple plans, AT&T uses various technologies to provide a variety of internet plans. Note that AT&T only offers unlimited data with fiber internet plans. The company enforces data caps on fixed wireless and DSL internet plans. Overall, AT&T Fiber is an ideal choice if available in your area. Otherwise, Spectrum is a much better option with fiber-like internet speeds, unlimited data, and no contracts.

Spectrum vs. Cox

Both Spectrum and Cox are cable internet providers. However, they don’t share many coverage areas. While Spectrum is the second largest cable internet provider, Cox is only available in 19 states, with the best availability in Cleveland, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Diego, and Wichita. Meanwhile, Spectrum covers 41 states and has the best availability in the Northeast.

Compared to Spectrum, Cox offers a variety of plans, but they tend to be on the pricier side. Its three popular high-speed internet plans, Preferred, Ultimate and Gigablast, cost $20 more than Spectrum’s three internet plans. Moreover, these plans come with data caps of 1.25 TB and 1 to 2-year contracts. Whereas, Spectrum offers unlimited data and contract-free internet plans. Both providers offer a 30-day money-back guarantee to new customers. Overall, Spectrum is a much better choice compared to Cox. Its internet plans are cheaper and come with no data caps, a free modem, and a Security Suite app.

Customer Service

Customer satisfaction has always been a sore issue for many internet providers. However, Spectrum has considerably improved in this area since it acquired Time Warner Cable. It scored 63 in the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s latest report. And although its score is 2 points behind the industry-average score, it is still a significant improvement from 59 two years ago. Spectrum has also improved a lot on J.D. Power US Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study for 2021. Although still behind AT&T and Xfinity, it earned its highest score in the Southern region by scoring 725 on a 1000-point scale.

So we can see a significant improvement in recent years, but there is still room for better performance. You can contact Spectrum’s customer service by

  • Visiting your local Spectrum store
  • Using their online chat feature
  • Messaging them on Twitter @Ask_Spectrum
  • Messaging them on Facebook @Spectrum
  • Calling them on 1-888-369-2408

We provide honest reviews about various internet providers by analyzing and comparing third-party data. We use the following metrics to rate our internet providers:

  • Availability
  • Internet Type
  • Prices
  • Internet Speed
  • Customer Satisfaction

Spectrum Internet might not be the cheapest option in the market, but it provides superb value by pairing high-speed internet with unlimited data. It is an ideal choice for many people who want to choose a suitable internet plan with a reliable internet provider who doesn’t lock them into lengthy and complicated contracts. Therefore, it is one of the top internet providers in the US and goes head-to-head with other big names like Verizon, AT&T Internet, and Xfinity.

You can find Spectrum in most parts of the United States as it is one of the most widely available internet providers, covering 41 states. Its home internet plans are an excellent alternative to fiber-optic internet. Their high speeds make them the best internet provider for gaming, streaming, and working from home.

I'm not a fan of Spectrum's Internet Service. I've had it for a few months now, and it's been nothing but trouble. The speeds are slower than advertised, and the service is often down. I've had to call customer service several times in a few months.

I have been using Spectrum's internet service for a little over a year now, and I have been very happy with the service. The speed is always consistent, and I have never had any connectivity issues. The customer service is also great - any time I have had to call, the representatives have been always helpful. Overall, I am very happy with Spectrum.

Overall service is good but once the promotion period ended my monthly bill increased significantly.

Excellent Service!

We were expecting a Spectrum tech guy to visit us to fix some internet issues. Even before he arrived we received a heads-up call in advance. The technician arrived on time and got to work straight away. Must appreciate the support service but I hope I don't need them very often.
